Mission: Episode 2 - The Enemy Within
Location: Astrometrics Lab
Timeline: MD001 1200 hrs

Vaebn was sitting at the main control panels for the Astrometrics systems and had the holographics showing a detailed, or as best as possible, map of the Badlands. He was awaiting the arrival of Ens Blackthorne so they could go over the mission briefing, and lay out some ideas for how they could navigate the ship through such a tumultuous region. A large PADD lay on the console with a list of ideas and components that he would need to discuss with the Chief Engineer sometime soon, but only after he got some input from the rest of his staff regarding the whiskers plan.

A thought occurred and he made a note on the PADD to contact the a friend back in the Romulan Guard regarding maps of the Badlands that he had worked on. If he could get them and upload them into the Astrometrics systems, they may have a clearer picture of routing the ship.

The doors to the Astrometric lab opened exactly at 1200 hours and Zavior Blackthorne walked in. His uniform was perfectly pressed as he marched directly to his new department head. “Good afternoon sir,” he said. He looked the Romulan directly in his eyes.

He met the young officers eyes, "Good afternoon Ensign. Please, pull up a chair. There are a number of things we need to go over today, and first among them is our primary mission."

“Of course sir.” Zavior took the closest chair and moved it toward the work station. He sat and awaited his superiors input and eventual orders.

"As you can see from the charts, we are headed into the Badlands. Not the best place, but our orders are to gather regional data, create astronomical charts and the like, in order to build a better understanding of the ebbs and flows of the region, for further Starfleet patrols and missions. To help guide the ship safely, and assist in the gathering of said data, our Chief Engineer and I are currently modifying class VII probes to surround and mimic the flight of the ship as a sort of whisker network. It is my hope that this network will act as an early warning system against the plasma storms and discharges in the region. Work on this project will be a top priority for our staff, and a portion of the engineering department, during the trip to the badlands." Vaebn adjusted the holographic display and zoomed in on a section of the badlands. "Here is our secondary mission priority. This is the area that USS Voyager disappeared from during their encounter with the Caretaker array. We have been ordered to search this area for any technology or other anomalies that may have been caused or left behind by that incursion." He pulled his gaze from the star charts and looked to his Assistant Chief, "Any questions so far?"

“Yes Sir, I understand perfectly,” Zavior said. He glanced at the hologram.

“Has there been any additional information in regards to the Caretaker? Any more encounters I’m not aware of?”

"There was nothing in the briefing regarding any new activity from the Caretaker, and we are operating under the directive that it was indeed destroyed by Voyager under Admiral Janeway. However, there may be residual traces of the technology that was used to transport Voyager across the known galaxy." Vaebn reached to the console and picked up one of the PADDs, handing it to Zavior, "I would like you to head up the research team regarding the Caretaker project during this mission. Along with the Caretaker, I would also like you to look into the old Maquis files. Their reasons for choosing this area to operate from may be more than a coincidence for why the Caretaker was taking vessels from this region. There might be a connection, and I believe that your expertise will be invaluable when searching this incident."

“Understood sir,” Zavior said. “As I am not as familiar with the crew as you are do you have any suggestions on who might best be part of my team?”

"I wish I could tell you that, but I was also just assigned to this vessel, and have only been here since this morning. I'm still learning names and fields of study as well, so we will doing all of this on the fly, as I believe the expression goes." He looked at the other PADD in his hand. "I've given you a roster of personnel who may be, more or less, the best suited for the mission parameters, and I've done the same for myself. We should only need a team of 4 or 5 each, and use anyone else for overflow, independent research, or routine staffing." Vaebn stood and walked over to the replicator on the wall, "Speaking of staffing, we are required to staff the bridge around the clock. The Captain has placed me on Alpha shift at 0700, which means you get to have either Beta shift or Gamma shift. We can fill the station with other staff when we are needed in other areas of the ship." Vaebn tapped the replicator console and had it make him a thermal mug of coffee, almost ever present in the hands of the scientist. "Would you like anything to drink?"

“Please Sir,” Zavior said, “coffee,Jamaican blend, black. Seems like the fuel that runs the science deapartment.” The Ensign smiles. “It should prove to be an interesting tour with both you and I getting our bearing in the department.”

Zavior watch the Romulan closely while trying not to let him notice. A Romulan roommate on his last ship and a Romulan department head in this one. Very interesting he thought. He would have to do some additional research on how Romulan culture has changed since distruction of the Empire.

Vaebn handed the young ensign his mug and took a long sip of his own. "Well then, now that we have our coffee, lets get to work." he said as he pulled out his chair at the console and began to build the programming for the whisker network as the ensign looked on. "We have a long way to go."
