It was Merrick's turn to stand guard outside of the Secret Compartmentalized Information Facility, SCIF for short. They couldn't allow just anyone to come in and out due to the secure nature of what lay behind the closed doors. He kept watch, being vigilant. He was familiar with at least, the Chief of Intelligence, Commander McGowen and Assistant Intelligence Lieutenant Mira, anyone else he wasn't certain.

Gage had finally gotten settled into his quarters and had met a lot of the crew, especially most of the department heads. He wouldn't have said that he was comfortable aboard the ship just yet but he was on his way. He was trying to make sure he made good impressions, especially with Commander McGowen. He was on his way to the SCIF, head down and reading a PADD, and was completely absorbed in the content.

"Excuse me where do you think you are going, Sir? Just who are you?" The blonde Marine standing directly in front of the door and providing a rather solid obstacle.

Gage stopped in his tracks, his head coming up. He realized where he was, his mind going back to the last time he was in the same spot and unrecognized. He sighed. How long would it be until he could get into his own office without being accosted? He took in the officer who'd spoken.

"Good morning, Captain. My name is Lieutenant Gage Tohoyia. I am the new Infiltration Specialist on the Pioneer," he said and held out his free hand. "And you are?"

Edmund cocked his head to one side, the man's voice sounded slightly familiar. "Infiltration specialist. Let me see your credentials." not taking the man's hand as of yet. "My name is Captain Edmund Merrick. "

Gage reached into the collar of his uniform and pulled out a small square bit of metal. Every Intelligence Officer had to be able to prove their bona fides, even when access to a computer wasn't possible. Gage had the added complication that he was often under cover. As a result, Starfleet Intelligence had issued him credentials that were without reproach. He handed the credential case to the Marine officer.

"Here you are, Captain," he said with a smile and waited for things to check out.

Getting the credentials run, Merrick raised an eyebrow, "Wait... when did you and I meet?" he was having a momentary niggling in the back of his mind.

"I think maybe you were rushing into the lab to save some of the crew and I looked like a Romulan? You might have been pointing a phaser in my direction too, now that I think about it," Gage said. "One of my better first impressions really."

Edmund finding that the credentials were solid, handed them back to Gage. "Oh? Interesting to hear that. And to satisfy my curiosity, in what way was it a good impression?"

"Well, you didn't shoot me. I've had that happen before so anytime a first encounter doesn't end in me getting shot, is a good impression," Gage said. He tucked his credentials away again. "I suppose we will be seeing each often, Captain. Unless this is an unusual posting for you?"

"Well this isn't my regular posting, but I put myself in the rotation. I can't be the sort to just stay in my cushy job of being a marine XO now can I?" flashing a small grin. "When the next shift starts, I'll be heading out and do some RnR. What about you?" Edmund replied.

"I heard that there is a beach get-together in holodeck one. It's been a long time since I was able to get my feet wet and enjoy the sun. I'm also still finding my way around the ship. Being the new guy is pretty hard."

Merrick gave a nod. "Well, I've not been on the ship for very long either. I've done some exploring of some areas. Science, the bridge, and engineering. Even checked out the counseling offices. And even the bar After 11 that is a nice place." he shifted his stance, "I do plan on going down to the planet below SB50 to get some actual sun and swim in their water."

"Oh you're new too? Seems like quite a few new faces here. Makes me feel a little less like an outsider. Maybe we could catch a drink at that bar sometime and you can regale me with your Marine stories?"

"I could do that, and you can tell me about your work in Intelligence. Well, the things you are allowed to tell me. Well actually make that, maybe about your hobbies and what you do when off work." Edmund replied. "So yeah, drinks, food. Do that once we're off our shift."

Gage smiled. "Sounds great. I'll let you know when I finish up. Nice to meet you," he said and nodded as he moved off.

"Sounds great, I'll be looking forward to that." Edmund replied as he watched the intelligence officer head inside. Once the door closed behind the man, Merrick took up his post once more.
