Mission: Episode 12 - Risin' To Risa
Location: Security - Deck 9 - USS Pioneer
Timeline: MD008 1000 hrs

Alyssa preferred using a blowgun on away teams as it was versatile and easily concealed. She also liked being able to use tranquilizer darts as they were both fast-acting and non-lethal. Unfortunately, the weapon was unconventional and unauthorized for Starfleet. that meant she needed to get it approved every time she transferred to a new ship. She slipped one of her blowguns and a couple of darts into her cross-pack and headed to security to get them cleared.

She paused in front of the chief's door and rang the chime.

"Enter." Larim said. He was seated at his desk, checking his phaser

The science officer walked in and smiled. "Hi. I'm Alyssa Maren, the new head of science. I would like to clear a rather unconventional weapon for use on away missions."

"Commander Myles. Larim. Welcome to the Pioneer." He smiles. Larim's eyebrow rose slightly. "How unconventional?"

She pulled out the small blowgun and one of the darts and set them on his desk. "I use tranquilizer darts. I'm an archaeologist and usually have a knife in my boot or on my belt, and a blowgun. I will carry a phaser when required, but I use the other two more often. The blowgun can be slipped into a seam or wrapped around a wrist as jewelry. I've used them when I don't have room on a belt or I need to keep the weapon out of sight, and the knife is incredibly versatile." She hoped the explanation would help him understand why she chose the weapons she did.

"I see. Definitely unconventional." He said with a slight chuckle. "Have your previous CO's had an issue with it?"

"Not yet," she said honestly, trying not to chuckle. She was used to getting this type of reaction as it really was an odd choice of weapon. "I've had a few occasions when having a concealed weapon like this came in handy. And I never use anything lethal." She knew that phasers were generally on stun, but she still preferred the darts when possible. "One previous commander actually wanted one of her own."

"That's awesome." Larim smiled. He picked up the blow gun and started to examine it. "Handy." He said. "Because there are some environments where a phaser just isn't practical. First contacts and stuff like that." Larim said.

"True. It's a weapon frequently used by primitive civilizations. I generally practice with a dartboard, but I've also used it on a standard shooting range." It wasn't the most practical for the shoot-don't-shoot holodeck training scenarios she knew some departments used, but it met her particular needs. "I'll still keep up on my phaser training and certification," she assured him. That would always be required by Starfleet, and she was okay with that.

"Excellent and I would make sure that you log your weapons in with the Master At Arms. It is their responsibility to keep track. Just a paperwork sort of thing." Larim said with a smile. "Now if you would excuse me I have to go over the latest security blotter."

"I will," Alyssa assured him. "Thank you." She'd fill out the paperwork and submit it as soon as she got back to her office so she wouldn't put it off--or get distracted. She gave him a formal half-bow and headed back to science. She waited until she was out of security before grinning.
