Mission:
Episode 14 - The Poseidon Adventure
Location: Science Office - Deck 8 - USS Pioneer
Timeline: MD012 1300 hrs
Zanna had asked the others for a quick lunch meet up so she could meet the team and they could meet her. She was still a bit sideways about it all-the ship was large and imposing, the Starbase they were docked at was too big. She got lost a lot, and was too nervous to ask for help.
She settled in with her replicated lunch-a ham sandwich, some strawberries, and chips. A bottle of water to wash it all down with. She hoped the others would be here soon. She didn't like to wait too long for people-it made her think they were talking about her or something.
Sha'Zen entered the room she'd been examining the scans she'd taken of the fauna and flora on her trip to the planet Aquil. She had her lunch which consisted of a fried chicken sandwich, assorted nuts and fruits and a glass of mixed fruit juices that approximated the taste of the fruits native to her homeworld.
Seeing the new ensign, the SerNumi's changed to a purple colour which indicated curiosity among her people.
"You, must be Ensign Ligan. I am Chief Petty Officer Sha'Zen D'Tem. You a shorter than I thought you'd be."
Zanna smiled. "HI, yes, I am. Oh, sorry. I will tell my mom," she said. "Sha'Zen. Where do you come from?" She asked. They were interrupted by another person entering.
Selorina sauntered into the room. "Please excuse my colleague, Ma'am. Sha'Zen's people can be blunt. She means no disrespect." She said. "I'm Lieutenant Selorina M'Kress, Astrometrics officer, a pleasure to meet you, ma'am." Her voice was rich and a little deep.
Zanna smiled again. "It's no problem. Feel free to join us," she said. "It's just a busy day and I didn't want to leave the labs but wanted to meet everyone!" She tried to sound friendly instead of nervous.
"I come from a planet called SerNumia IV, it is covered in lush jungles where we fight vicious Tuk'Nar beasts." Sha'Zen replied.
Zanna looked at her. "Interesting. I've never heard of it. Tell me about your home," she said. "Everyone knows about Trill."
"My world doesn't have any large above ground cities. We live in small communities either underground or within the high branches of trees." Sha'Zen began. "There is a part of my world that few visit, it is called the Twilight Isles where the Wil-Zak live. They are venomous creatures. a Terran scorpion and a Terran spider, but the size of a Terran house cat, only worse."
Zanna nodded. "I see. That sounds terrible, actually." She said. "How about you, Selorina? You're Caitian. Are you from Cait?" She asked. She had had a Caitian roommate one of her years at the Academy.
"Yes, I'm a Caitian, but I was born on the Caitian colony of Hochlor IV. My father is on the colonial council."
Zanna smiled. "Neat!! I was born on Trill, and lived there until I left for Officer's training," she said. "My father was a science teacher at the University, but my mom works for the Trill Council," she said. "Did you both know immediately you wanted to join Starfleet?"
"Yes, I used to look up at the stars and dream of seeing them up close." Selorina said. "After earning my degrees, I worked out that Starfleet was the best way to achieve my dreams, so I entered Officer School. What about you, Ma'am?"
Zanna smiled. 'I trained at the Trill Science Academy," she said. "One of my professors recommended it to me, but it took me a year to figure out it was the best idea for me. I wanted to do research but the Trill government has a lot of rules about the hierarchies and things...I couldn't research what I wanted to there so it made more sense to do this. PLUS, I get to see the Universe, and meet new people," she said. "So..what do you guys do for fun?"
"I like singing." Selorina said.
"I enjoy hunting, but as a group activity I've recently discovered darts." Sha'Zen said.
She smiled. "That's fun. I like sports and hiking and that kind of thing," she said. "Outdoors stuff. It's good for getting your mind off work," she said. These kinds of things were always a little bit weird at first, weren't they?
"My work has a lot of outdoors time to it." Sha'Zen added. "I look for and study new lifeforms. My best friend, Azure is a botanist and our work overlaps."
Zanna nodded. "Oh, great!! That sounds fun. I might join you some days; I am a chemist by training but I like Zoology, too," she said. "Chemistry is just fun. I like to blow things up," she said.
"I would enjoy the company." Sha'Zen said.
Zanna nodded. "Next time you go out, I'll come along!" She said. She finished her lunch.
"Good." Sha'Zen simply said and returned to her lunch.
"She's a woman of few words" Selorina said returning to the table with a plate of lightly cooked salmon.
Zanna nodded. "Me, too, usually." She said. "Sometimes that's for the best. Some people talk too much." She said. She hated the really chatty types. "It's been nice to meet you both. I am excited for all of us to work together," she said.
"You too, ma'am." Selorina said. Sha'Zen simply smiled.
Zanna smiled. This had gone better than she expected. "Well, enjoy the rest of your lunch. I have to meet with Alyssa," she said. "We'll talk more later!!" She stood up, putting her things into the recycler.
