Mission: Episode 14 - The Poseidon Adventure
Location: Holodeck 2 - Deck 5 - USS Pioneer
Timeline: MD007 0930 hrs

Jayna had several things she needed to do when she returned to the Pioneer, but once she had some free time, she decided to find the new intel officer. She was curious about him, and she liked to know the people she'd be working with.

When the computer informed her, he was on the holodeck taking advantage of the open beach program, she decided that swimming would be a good workout as well as a chance to meet Gage.

She changed into a one-piece suit and added shorts and a tank top in black and headed to the holodeck.

Gage was having more fun than he'd had in... literally months. He was perched on a surfboard, carefully angling towards the beach, which was covered with a good number of the Pioneer's crew. The water was a dappled dark and light blue with schools of exotic fish swirling beneath him. He'd only attempted this once before and... the wave surged toward the beach, catching him off guard he began to sway from side to side.

"I got this. I got this," he mumbled to himself.

Jayna walked in and slowed, keeping far enough away to not startle the man on the board. She didn't want to be the reason he fell off and right now, it could go either way. She recognized the surfer as the man she was looking for and moved to a less-conspicuous spot to observe him while she waited.

The best part about making a fool of one’s self is when you didn't know anyone around you. Gage slightly recognized some of the faces but he wouldn't have said he knew any of them. So, when things went sideways, literally, and he lost his balance and windmilled into the warm ocean water, nobody noticed.

He let the wave wash him ashore and his board washed up right next to him. He thought the board was sorry. "That went well," he said and wiped some water and sand from his face, making no effort to sit up.

"For a beginner, it went very well," Jayna said, coming up to the water's edge. "Would you like a hand up?" She'd never tried surfing herself, but she'd seen enough people do it to know that it took a lot of practice.

"Yes, please," he said and held his hand out. He was surprised in the strength in her grip. When he was back on his feet, he turned the clasped hands into a handshake. "Thanks. I'm Gage Tohoyia."

"Mira Jayna. Nice to meet you. Actually, I came looking for you. I'm also in intel."

Gage smiled. "And here I was hoping that this was just a nice initial meeting between adults. We're going to be work colleagues as well as beach acquaintances. What is it that you do here on the ship?" Gage said, taking a moment to knock the sand off of his legs.

"I'm the assistant chief and the intel liaison for The Cure." She smiled. "I saw you come out with the science team. Well done."

Gage rubbed his face with a hand, shedding the remaining droplets of water. He could hear laughter from other crewmembers behind him. A tall human waiter wearing a long white jacket over bare feet passed nearby.

"Thanks. Right place right time kind of situation," Gage said and waved the waiter down. A cool drink sounded perfect. "Would you like to grab a drink and take a walk? This beach is fantastic."

"Sure," she replied. "The Pioneer has some great areas for the crew. It's a special ship." The longer she was here, the more she grew to appreciate it.

Gage grabbed one of the drinks and the two set off down the beach, dodging other crew playing a game of volleyball. They certainly seemed like a happy crew to him. He took a drink, enjoying the fruity flavors. "So," he said around a mouthful of ice. "Tell me about yourself? How did you end up on the Pioneer?"

"The same way most people do. I was transferred." She took a swallow of her drink and smiled. "I knew the ship was based at Empok Nor, and I liked that because I'm from Bajor, but it was more than I expected."

"I've spent a lot of my time interacting with Romulans so this whole area is new to me. In fact, this is the first time I've served on a ship since I switched to Intelligence. Being around so many other Starfleet personnel is taking some getting used to," he said, nodding at a group of people playing volleyball. "So, what are some important things I should know about the ship and the crew?"

Jayna watched the game for a moment before answering. "Well, there's a Romulan in intel and a half-Romulan in security, so they should help you feel at home." She grinned. "There's a lot of diversity among the crew. One thing you should know is that intel sometimes does joint missions with The Cure, which is the Marine detachment on the Pioneer. You may have met Major Tremble. He's also the XO." She was paying attention to their surroundings. It was a habit long-ingrained even though they were on the holodeck.

"Thanks for the pointers," Gage said. "It really is nice to be working somewhere that I don't have to be worried about being attacked or betrayed all the time. That Romulan Science Unit was a really wretched place to be undercover. It wears on you. I like this beach much better."

"Yes. You should find some time to go to Risa, too." She looked around the beach and thought back to that day on the planet. "I wasn't in the facility long, but what I saw was horrible," she said. "I'm concerned that they got away with the research."

"It was disturbing. And being in the middle of everything without being able to do anything right away is a horrible feeling. But I'm glad I was there to help out the crew, even if they did want to shoot me at first glance," he said and laughed. "Not that I blamed them." They'd walked past the spot where most of the crew had been hanging out and moved on to a section of the beach that was unoccupied. The waves were a shimmering blue that crashed against a line of half-submerged rocks, sending a white spray into the air. Gage breathed in the smell of the sea.

"You handled it well," Jayna said, enjoying the feel of the sand beneath her feet. "Especially when they didn't know if they could trust you. I'm glad it all turned out well--at least for getting the scientists back. I still wonder where that Romulan woman went." Part of her wondered if they'd run into the woman--or her experiments--again. She smiled at Gage. "I don't like loose ends."

"Me either," Gage said and upended his glass, drinking what remained. "They tend to come back at the worst time and Romulans are especially good at that. Anyways, how about a swim? I think I could use it." He set his glass down on the sand, waiting to see what her response would be.

She hesitated for a moment. This was the holodeck on the Pioneer and was also filled with people. There were no bogeymen here. She needed to talk to Neil about going down to the planet so she could work through this. "Sure."

The swim ended up being fantastic. The sunset was even better.

It was the first time Jayna had used this particular program, and she'd definitely do so again at some point. It was also nice meeting Gage in a...less hostile setting. He'd fit in well with the intel department.
