Mission: Episode 11 - Family Matters
Location: Holodeck 1 - Deck 5 - USS Pioneer
Timeline: MD001 1300 hrs

Jayna walked onto the holodeck and immediately recognized where she was: The forest where her family once lived, where she and Jayde spent their childhood. Bajor during the occupation. Specifically, the part of the forest the resistance cell called home until her parents were killed. It was the program her sister chose when they again met on the Pioneer. It immediately put Jayna on her guard.

“Jayde,” she called, not sure if her sister was in their family home or the nearby grove they often called theirs.

“Over here.”

Jayna followed the voice to the small clearing the girls used as their secret hiding place when they wanted to be alone or just get away and play. “Hi. What’s up?”

Jayde dropped down from one of the trees. “I have news. I hope it’s good.”

Jayna had a good idea what it was, and wasn’t so sure about how good it was. Just the fact that her sister chose this program was telling. “You’re leaving.”

“Well, yes, in two weeks. I’ve been offered a promotion to department head.”

“Really? Where?” Jayna was thrilled for her sister and sad that they wouldn’t be able to see each other every few days as they had on the Pioneer. To be fair, she knew she hadn’t expected the two of them to stay on the same ship for long.

“The Hyperion. It’s a Nova-class, but I have more opportunities there.” She wished she could bring her sister with her, but at the moment there was already someone in intel, and it was a tiny department. “We can still get together. I think we should visit Bajor.” She raised a hand before her sister could object. “I know you haven’t been back since we left, but I think it would be good for us to go together, see how much the place has changed.”

“Relive old memories,” Jayna added. She knew it was time—past time—but she didn’t think she was ready. Not yet. Then again, would she ever truly be ready?

“Then we’ll meet on DS9.” Jayde looked at her for a long moment. “You need to let go of the past and move on.”

“I have moved on. We left Bajor, left the Maquis, and joined Starfleet. Until Empok Nor, I hadn’t even thought about them.” That wasn’t exactly true. She’d thought about them, but not in the way she had on Empok Nor. Not when she pretended to become one of them again.

Jayde nodded. “I know. Still, humor me. Next year we’ll take some time off and meet. Bajor if you can, DS9 if you can’t. You don’t have to decide now. Six months from now, we can decide. And we still have two weeks before my transfer.”

She was right. They did have a few days left, and Jayna wanted to make the most of them. The two had spent a lot of time together on the Pioneer. It had been good to do more than catch up over video conferences. “You’re right. It’s definitely time to go back and say goodbye one last time.”

Jayde hugged her sister. “Yes. But until then, I want to light a candle here for our parents.” She held out her hand and opened it, showing a Bajoran earring.

Jayna sighed and took it. “For today.”

“And next year on Bajor,” Jayde said, putting on her own earring.

Jayna sighed. She’d always embraced her Vulcan heritage—except for keeping her emotions in check—but she’d practically abandoned her Bajoran side. Neither she nor her sister had any physical resemblance to their father. Perhaps it was time for that, too. “Yes. And next year on Bajor.”

Her sister smiled and nodded, pleased that her sister agreed so easily. Without another word, the two headed for the temple.
