Mission: Episode 10 - New Home, Same Pioneers
Location: Chief of the Boat's Office - Deck 6 - USS Pioneer
Timeline: MD008 1100 hrs

Tyler had finished his meeting with Larim and while he was still on the topic of Romulans he thought he would go see the fourth member of his command team. In truth Tyler felt remiss in his duty as he had not officially met the Chief of The Boat. He knew that she had just come aboard a few days ago. He rang the door chime and waited to be let in. No sense in barging in when we have not even met yet. Tyler thought.

Lan was walking around her desk as she was reading reports. In the background the computer was reading passages to her from a Vulcan novel. When her door chimed she lowered her padd and said, "Computer pause." She then turned to the door. "Enter."

She blinked a little. She hadn't expected the captain. Also she has been all over to the ship to familiarize herself with the crew and the different departments, which she was still basically doing, so he hadn't time to go to see him either. "Captain, I apologize for not reporting for duty sooner. I found that my presence was needed so I took up duties right away. ?"

Tyler waved his hand as if to say that there was no excuse needed. "Chief I appreciate someone who jumps right into their work. I thought I would come to you. Get to know the person behind the file. A service record can only go so far in telling who the person is. Welcome aboard the Pioneer."

Lan looked a moment to the padd she was holding. She then put it in her desk drawer. "Well, sir," she motioned for him to take a seat as she continued to talks, "There is not much to say more than what is in my file. Unless you want to talk about my private life."

A matter of fact individual. Not sure what to make of that as of yet. Tyler thought. "No nothing like that. Just tell me a little about yourself. For example I know your sister is also assigned here. I like to know the kind of person that serves under my command. There is a lot more to serving then simply following orders and the like."

"Understood," Lan replied with a nod. "I am not sure how much acquainted you are with my sister. But there is a difference between the two of us, not only is she younger than me, she was also raised on Earth, while I was raised on Vulcan. I was raised according to Vulcan ways, you might have noticed in the way I speak to you. My sister is very young and not to mention that, unlike me, her control of her emotions is not that controlled, this might cause her to be a bit more impulsive than you would expect from a Vulcan."

She sat down finally. "I am a Vulcan, we adhere to hierarchy and respect ranks. But we also follow logic, if logic dictates an order is not logical I will certainly let you know. But that does not mean I should defy a direct order from a commanding officer."

hmmmm, a coldly logical Vulcan hybrid. She could be the next Spock. Tyler thought and then shunned that thought right out of his head. He did not want to compare anyone. "I expect my officers to advise me if they feel that my orders are incorrect. Although you do not hold an officer's rank I consider you a member of the Senior Staff. As such you should attend briefings and act as my liaison with the enlisted personnel on this ship. In dire emergencies you may be asked to take command of the bridge."

Lan nodded. "Yes, sir, though this is my first time as a chief of the boat, I am quite familiar with the role. In the meantime is there anything I should be made aware off?" She asked.

"At the moment there are two things I would like you to look into. The first is work with Captain Tremble to make sure that his enlisted Marines are integrated into the crew at large. I want the Marines to be welcome, no division between Fleet and Corps. The other task is to try and get the pulse of the enlisted. I want to know how they are handling the abrupt change in fleet policy." Tyler realized that at least for now he would treat his COB as a Vulcan. Short, sweet and to the point.

Lan nodded. "Yes, sir, I will speak with Captain Tremble and I will go around the enlisted on the ship. I have already gotten a list of all enlisted personnel on the ship. I shall arrange separate meetings with them. Is there anything else you would like me to do?"

"No Chief not at the moment. Thank you for your time. Please report any issues that you may have." With that Tyler rose and exited the office. As he left and headed back toward the bridge Tyler found himself dwelling on the history of that position on the Pioneer. He fad a feeling within him that this Chief Nguyen would do a lot of good for the ship. Change can be a very good thing. he thought.
