Mission: Episode 8 - The Silence
Location: Sickbay - Deck 5 - USS Pioneer
Timeline: MD001 1000 hrs

"How's the Command Senior Chief doing?" Hermia asked the duty nurse.

"All his vitals are stable and his face is healing well, ma'am." She replied.

"Well, let's wake him up and see what he thinks of the Boss's work." Hermia said.

"Aye, ma'am." the nurse said, prepared a hypo and handed it to Hermia.

Hermia checked it's contents before pressing it to Moore's neck, injecting him with a stimulant.

Moments later Moore began to awaken.

Andrew groaned as his eyes fluttered open and he squinted against the light. As he did his mind grasped on to the last thing he remembered and he shot up, getting to his feet and immediately falling to his knees. As he did his hand shot towards the deck for the knife he’d dropped before he realized nothing was there and instead of the red dirt of Cardassia he was seeing the carpeted deck of a Federation ship, “where.....” he said as his body started to crumple back against the biobed.

"Its okay, Andrew, you're on the Pioneer, you're safe." Hermia said helping him onto the biobed. She could feel his distress and attempting to help him relieve it, she asked. "What's your last memory, Andrew?"

“Fighting,” the SCOB replied simply and and closed his eyes for a second before reaching up to his face, “and pain, excruciating pain.....”

"Rest still, you've been through a lot." Hermia said. "I can give you something for the pain." She said. "Your face was badly damaged and Doctor Ballston had to rebuild it."

Moore smiled weakly and was about to ask for the proffered medication when a darkness crept into his vision on all sides. His eyes rolled into the back of his head and then closed. His vital signs began to fluctuate on the bio monitors.

Ensign Goldberg had been doing his rounds and he was beyond glad that the Senior Chief was not his patient. Not that he was not a skilled doctor, it was more that he preferred to avoid the critical patients. A patient who received a new face was one of the most critical that Howard had seen to date. As he checked the bio bed of a Crewman across the room from Moore the sound of Moore's bio alarms went off. He jogged over to Hermia. "Is there anything that I can do to help Dr O'Rourke."

"Yes, he's crashing. Get me 20cc of Lectrazine so I can stablize his heart and blood pressure and an set a neural simulator to 57 mill-hertz." Hermia said.

Howie nodded his acknowledgement of the orders. He was taught early on that in a situation like this it is best to have the fewest amount of words possible. This was something that he had hoped he would not see during his residency. But was sure that it would be unavoidable. The idea that one of the crew would be lying dying in front of him chilled him to the bone. He set to work and handed the now loaded hypospray to Hermia. Goldberg placed neural stimulator and activated it's link to the ship's computer. "Stimulator is charged and ready Doctor."

"Activate." Hermia ordered as she monitored Moore's lifesigns.

Moore's body shook as the jolt of energy from the stimulator made its way through his body. "No effect charging 65..." Goldberg called out as the machine began the recharge sequence. Moments later it indicated it was ready and Howard followed the stacked charge procedure. He did not wait for the order. Once again Moore's body racked with the shock and this time the monitor got a response. "We have his brain waves back Doctor. But it looks like he is barely there. We are going to lose him if we do not do something soon." Howard looked toward Hermia he was at a loss.

"Okay, we'll have to induce a coma." Hermia said. "I'm going to need you to get the propofol, a 20ml of a 5cc solution, should be enough. The biobed can synthasize more from that." She ordered. "I'll program the infusion pump."

Goldberg jogged over to the dispensary and retrieved the requested medication. He found himself wondering if they would keep the Chief on the Pioneer. Keeping someone in a coma was a huge drain on ship's resources and there was the fact that if the Pioneer found itself in battle the Chief could die. Howard pushed those thoughts from his head as he arrived back at the patient's side. "Here you go Doctor." He passed the vial of medication over.

Hermia knew this was a long shot, but it was the Senior Chief's only chance. "Thanks." She said accepting the medication. She placed the vial in the recess and activated the machine. A metallo-plastic cuff wrapped around Moore's arm and the medication was introduced into his blood stream. Hermia watched as his vitals lowered. His breathing became shallow and his heart rate slowed. Now it was up to his body to heal itself. They'd done all they could bar monitor his progress.

Howard glanced down at Moore and then looked at Hermia grimly. "I guess all there is now is hope..."

"I'm afraid so." Hermia said.
