Last Time on Consciousness Is Overrated Part 1

But then again he might be. He tested the restraints and they were sound. He decided to test the computer, asking him for recognition and get a status update.

All that came out was, “Graahk!”

And Now The Conclusion...

Neil licked his lips and tried again, “Computer. Recognize”

“Voice print confirmed, 1st Lieutenant Cornelius Alphonse Tremble.”

“That’s new, he croaked out.” The computer did not reply. Instead, the curtain enclosure was pulled aside. Neil tensed again, then recognized the figure and relaxed slowly.

Ballston moved forward just a little so that the patient could see him better and offered a faint smile, "I see you're awake first Lieutenant."

He moved a little close and looked at the controls on the biobed and offered a bigger smile, "you sir are quite the mystery."

Swallowing again, Neil coughed then said "I'm guessing I lost Doc? Things are fuzzy. And I defiantly feel like someones been jumping up and down on my chest."

"I can't say if you lost or not," Richard replied and chuckled, "oh I think that might have been me and that staff.

Neil considered that and then said, "Really. Well that might need some explaining. What about the jewelry?" He moved his arm, causing causing the restraint to make a dull clacking noise.

Richard smiled as he moved closer to look into his eyes a bit better, "we've had some power issues and thought they would be better than a failing force field."

The doctor reached to his belt and then grasped one of the restraints around his wrist, "now that you're not trying to fight is I'll take them off." He smiled as he looked back at Tremble, "but you're bed bound until I say otherwise first Lieutenant."

Rubbing his wrist, Neil asked "I was fighting the medical staff? I don't remember anything like that. Last thing I remember is...." he hesitated. "How is the crew? My team? Did everyone make it out ok?"

Richard stopped his examination and took a deep breath, "you managed to injure your entire team as I understand it and yes, I ordered the restraints."

Sighing, Neil nodded slowly. "I have...shadow memories. Just bits and pieces of a lot of things. But, you said injured so hopefully nothing serious. And nobody died." He sat lost in thought for a while, then asked "And how long a stint am in for recovering from this, doctor?"

"You'll be here a few days," Richard said answering his second question first and the drew in a deep breath, "I have not been informed of a casualty you are directly responsible for, there probably would be security posted here if you did." He tilted his head and added, "I will be assigning counseling sessions, you've been through quite a bit Tremble."

Chuckling, Neil shrugged. "And this won't be my first counseling session either. It's par for the course." Sighing then, he shook his head. "Maybe I'm getting too old for this." Glancing at the Richard he said, "Looks like you got in on the action, Doctor. Were they repelling boarders again?"

Richard blushed and chuckled, "my own fault I guess, the power went out and a hover gurney hit me in the leg." He drew in a deep breath, "compound fracture."

"It's sad when even your own gear is trying to get you," Neil grinned. "But, if you want I'll help you get even with it. Just cut me loose and I'll make sure no gurney ever dares come near you again."

The doctor chuckled, "it is but I think we're going to be needing those gurneys quite a bit here."

"I'm just saying," Neil remarked, humor in his voice. "But alright, no revenge on the medical equipment."Glancing around, he asked, "Am I the only one hospitalized?"

"Sorry, but no," Richard replied letting out a sigh, "there are several of our crew that were injured and will require some time in recovery here." He took in a breath and offered a smile, "fortunately all should heal fine and be able to return to duty soon."

"That's a good prognosis," Neil remarked.

The ever-present smile of Richard's broadened again, "let's try to keep it that way shall we?" He chuckled, "I have a feeling you're going to end up right back in here."

One of Neil's eyebrows went up at that, "I thought that's how you kept in business, doc. Marines tend to get banged up a lot."

"Oh I'm well aware of that Tremble," Replied with a sigh, " served through a few wars and I honestly don't need that much business."

"I couldn't agree with you more, sir." Neil agreed."I've buried too many Marines. But, .... when the music starts you have to dance."
