The first thing he was aware of was light behind his eyelids. That was a welcoming sensation as his wakefulness blossomed slowly. That he was aware of his eyelids was interesting.

It was about the only thing that didn’t hurt.

He was also numb in places. The numb he decided wasn’t a bad thing either. It provided the contrast to the pain, which meant he was alive. Which in turn made it alright to open his eyes. When he’d first determined he was awake, there had been a moment. Just a moment when the possibility that death just wasn’t an inert state of nothingness and he’d been deemed unworthy of whatever might come next and he had some sort of penance to serve.

Or he was back in that Cardassian’s play room. The two might be one and the same. That there weren’t voices arguing, cajoling and outright making demands was refreshing, which meant he really couldn’t put off opening his eyes any longer.

If there was a threat, he’d have to deal with it. His Escape and Evasion training would have to kick in. Threats would need to be neutralized. There might be Marine work to get done.

And if he was dead, best to get on with that too.

He steeled himself, wondering idly if his body betrayed him and then opened his eyes. That was harder than it should have been. His eyelashes were momentarily stuck, then tore open. Blinking a few times cleared his vision and he recognized…

… a fairly standard, most likely Federation sick bay. Hopefully the Pioneer. He saw a shadow move and this time he felt himself tense. Something moved on the other side of the material wall that was being used to block him off from the rest of the room. That’s when he realized he was in restraints.

Frowning, he felt his heartbeat elevate and he had to reassure himself that he wasn’t in that Cardassian interrogation and re-education chamber.

But then again he might be. He tested the restraints and they were sound. He decided to test the computer, asking him for recognition and get a status update.

All that came out was, “Graahk!”
To be continued…
