“Are you sure your dad is eighty seven,” a young dark haired Bajoran girl asked. She was only eight years old and as part hovered close Abigail ballston like a satellite.

The gaggle of young girls that had taken the trip to the starbase within Cardassian Territory had managed to assemble themselves into a fairly tight knit group in spite only spending at most the two weeks it took to travel. There were only two humans in the group of five and with only one their destination as something in common at the start they had all formed bonds of friendship that drew them together tight enough it worried some of their parents.

Their transporting ship, the U.S.S. Haverly, was a constellation class star cruiser that picked up the Ballston family and several others on their way to Impok Nor. With a recent refit it used the occasion to test out it’s new warp drive and spent much if the time traveling at speeds around warp nine. Starbase Protector was on the opposite side Cardassian controlled space and with the Breen in between them their rout was anything but straight.

“He really is,” Abigail replied looking over at her friend, “my mommies are all in their hundreds too.”

“I think we all still find that unbelieveable,” a Cardassian girl replied with a chuckle, “they all look about the same age as our parents.”

“Oh yes,” a red haired human girl added as the group came to a halt about two meters from the shuttle bay doors that led into the station proper, “I looked it up myself Doctor Ballston in eighty seven, it’s so crazy.”

Abigail just giggled as did the whole group at the alleged preposterousness that the physician could actually be that old.

“Kalie,” the familiar almost singsong voice of the redheaded human girl’s mother said interrupting their musings, “we need to find the quartermaster and get settled.”

“Oh,” the girl protested with a mild groan of disappointment.

“It’s ok Kalie,” Abigail said trying to comfort her friend, “we’re going to be on the base together right.”

The readhead nodded and offered a faint smile, “see you around Abigail,” she offered before breaking away from the group and following her parents through the double doors.

“Yah,” the Cardassian girl piped up,” we’re all going to be here though your father is going to need to leave for the Pioneer soon.”

Abigail nodded feeling her smile vanish at the thought of her father leaving her, “I know.” She had put on a brave front but that facade was already breaking away.

“Are you ready for your new adventure on Impok Nor,” Fahli’ asked touching Abigail’s slender shoulder and gracefully crouching down so her pale eyes were on the same level as Abigail’s dark blue ones.

Fahli’s face wore a broad smile as she tried to cheer up the young girl with happier thoughts. Her blue dress and matching heels matched her ice blue eyes. It flowed gracefully around her as his draped down just above her knees and she scoop neck like showed off the blue brooch she wore just off to the right side.

“No’,” the girl replied shaking her head and turning to face the woman. She was fighting back tears as she struggled with facing life without seeing her father every day. “Now that we are here Mommy Fahli’ I don’t want Daddy to go.” Abigail was wearing one of her favorite dresses with a large floral print of reds, greens and blues, far more festive than she was feeling.

The woman brushed a few strands of the girl’s wavy blonde hair from her downcast face as she gazed at her with a broad smile, “I know this isn’t what you wanted precious and it’s not what your daddy was hoping for either.” Fahli’ rested her hand on Abigail’s cheek trying to comfort her, “but you’re daddy is needed on a ship called Pioneer, it’s a smaller one and we need to be here, on Impok Nor.”

Abigail nodded as she tried to raise her face to meet the blonde womans, “I know but I don’t want him to leave us.”

She glanced back at her father as he talked with an Andorian male from the base's operations department who would see to the delivery of their remaining supplies to their new quarters and then back at the blonde woman she had been talking to, “I know mommy Lei’hallah and mommy Adibah’ don’t what Daddy to have to leave either do they?”

She could see Lei’hallah and Adibah’ standing near her father listening carefully to his conversation with a Andorian Operations officer. They were both dressed in traditional Azzian dresses with a faces that were more complacent than that of Richard’s daughter.

“Oh no,” said Fahli’ as she stood back to her feet. She glanced towards the other three and drew in a deep breath, “none of us want your father to go but there is something more important than what we want Abigail.”

The girl nodded as she saw her father end his conversation and move towards her and Fahli’ with her other two mothers. Abigail looked back at the blonde woman and offered a faint smile, “duty.”
