Darf was glad to be out of the shuttle on his new home. Even though they teased him this was just a bigger tin can, he felt much more relaxed on the ship. He took it all in as he made his way from the Turbolift so he could check out his office on deck 2.

It was small and quaint but it will do the trick. He got all of his log ins up to date and checked the duty roster. Finally after he got some of the things ironed out he wanted to he figured now was a good time to catch the CO. After checking for the Captain's location Darf made his way to the ready room. After stepping off the life on the bridge he had a number of crew give him a second look as many people do. He has learned to ignore it. He made his way to the door and pressed the button.

Tyler had just resumed the reading he was doing before lunch. His new XO was due to report in and he figured he should read up on the XO's people. Tyler sat in deep reading with his cup of espresso when the chime went off. "Come on in" he shouted at the door without looking up from his terminal.

The door opened and Darf stepped through. He saw Tyler seated reading something and the smell from the espresso filled the room. "Greetings, Sir." Darf greeted as he made his way across the room in a couple strides.

Tyler looked up from his PADD briefly and despite all of his training did a double take as he set the PADD down. He had never seen what was before him. "Commander welcome please have a seat. Can I get you anything?" Tyler could not help but notice the two devices on the man's ankles. The whole image was quite astounding.

"Water would be great." Darf said as he found his seat. "Nice ship you have here. Looks like you made it out of the Badlands in one piece."

Tyler retrieved a glass of water from the replicator. "I love the Pioneer and we barely made it out. There is a new adversary in the Cardassian sector. But we can get into that later. I read your file it is quite impressive. Tell me about yourself..." Tyler sat back down and leaned back in his chair.

"Well I am Brikarian as you have read I come from a very warrior driven society but growing up I was a bit of an outcast. I was more of a tinker, and thinker. I like to take things apart and put them back together. When I joined Starfleet they tried to push me in the Security route and I can do just find in that but I made sure I kept with my passion of fixing things." He explained as he took a sip of water. "After graduation I spent the last twenty-two years working in Operations on the Wyoming. She was just decommissioned and at the recommendation of my retiring CO I was assigned here to be your XO."

"Well we are certainly glad to have you. Although you will forgive some of the crew as they have never met one of your kind before. Come to think of it this is a first contact situation for me." Tyler smiled broadly and laughed. "My previous XO had to depart suddenly in mid mission, family related emergency. I also wanted to apologize that we could not come to you. I trust you enjoyed your brief stay at Empok Nor and the journey here?"

"The stay on Empok was nice I actually meet Ms. O'Rourke for dinner while we were there." He said with a smile. "The ride here was... interesting. I am not a fan of shuttles." he said looking at his captain. "Whole big guy little can idea."

Tyler laughed "Quite so, I can imagine. I get cooped up in those things myself. I think you will like the Pioneer, but I warn you I can be a tough nut to crack as they say. This crew is family and I aim to keep em that way. I would recommend that you get any medical information to Dr Ballston immediately as I am sure the database does not have much on your people."

He sighed, "Now with most of the business out of the way. You better not take away my fun. I don't want to hear you can't go on the away mission sir." Tyler smirked as he looked at his new XO. In truth once the initial site of wore off you got used to the look of a rock person. Tyler did not want to admit it but the gravity anklets Darf wore made him a little nervous. He would address that issue later.

"I gave my medical file to O'Rourke so he should be good. As for the rest I serve at the pleasure of the Captain. My last CO was very hands on so I am used to that." Darf was glad the new boss wasn't a pain.

"There are two favors and one test I will ask of you. First the favors..." Tyler rolled his eyes as the sound of his wife's voice rang in his head. "...I have a tendency to lose my temper and go off half cocked. I need an XO who will not be afraid to pull me back from that when or if the time comes. It was for this reason that I originally chose an old friend to serve the post. It is my hope that in time you will call me friend. Do you think you can do this?"

Darf looked at Tyler then down at his six digits on his hands. Then back at Tyler. "I serve at the pleasure of the Captain up till said Captain endangers himself or the crew. Then you will get these hands." he said with a straight face.

Tyler laughed "Well said very well said. Secondly I prefer to run a ship as a unit as opposed to Captain and subordinates. In keeping with that method when we are in private. I am Tyler, or Ty if you prefer. Not Captain, or sir or anything of that nature it gives me the willies." Tyler shuddered he looked at the being who sat across his desk as he sipped his coffee. This being was full of surprises and Tyler rather liked that.

"My father taught me early on 'Happy wife Happy life'. Those words seem to apply similarly here." Darf said hoping to test the lightness of the mood.

Tyler chuckled "Yes at the Academy I was taught that my XO would be my work wife. So I guess this would be the honeymoon period. Is there anything that you want to know about me, this ship, the crew anything. Now's your chance to run back to the tin can shuttle."

"Well you said two Favors and a test, but only brought up two things? I am just curious as to the third." Darf replied with eagerness.

"Oh right... I almost forgot. Well you have to pass her test when we get back to Empok Nor." Tyler motioned to a picture of Kat that was on his desk. "You see she wants to make sure that I come home, and to do that she feels the need to grill my XO and feed them some of her cooking." He laughed heartily "Somehow I think you will do fine."

"That sounds like a test I can look forward to." Darf said with a belly chuckle. "So I hear talk on the ship of a New Maquis?"

Tyler sighed and sipped his coffee. "Yes quite so. It seems that certain Maquis members have teamed up with former Starfleet personnel and former Cardassian military to create an organization called the New Maquis. Their goal is to get Starfleet out of the Cardassian sector, restore the old Cardassian military to power and basically create a Federation vs Cardassian war. We just came back from taking out a base that they had appropriated from Cardassia deep in the Badlands. However, somehow I think they will come back. As XO there is something else that you should know. We took on some biogenic weapons that they were building. Doctor Ballston is working on defusing them as we speak. However, they need to be kept safe until we can off load them to Starfleet Intel at Empok Nor. The weapons are being stored in the cargo bay, officers only are allowed in. We also have two Maquis in our Brig but the Intel boys are dealing with them. All that and it is only our first mission." Tyler smirked and leaned back in his chair. He was gauging how his new number one would take the weight of all that he said.

Darf listened intently to the Captain as he discussed this new threat. "Well I am no Intel officer but I would guess the Federation is not surprised that someone has stepped up to fill that power void left after the war."

"I would be inclined to agree. But this cannot be allowed to go on. We will need to not only find whoever is at the top of this mess but put a stop to it as well. I would like you for the time being to keep tabs on the Doctor's progress. Those weapons make me a might twitchy if you understand my meaning." Tyler sipped his coffee as he leaned back in his chair.

"I will checking in with him a top priority." Darf said.
"Anything else I can do for you, Captain?"

"Nothing for the moment... Save to allow me to welcome you aboard. Also, it is a pleasure and rare treat to have you serve with me. If there is nothing else the bridge is yours Commander." Tyler smiled, rose and extended his hand for a handshake. He knew that he was leaving his ship and his crew in good, strong capable hands, and he was the happier for it.
