Mission: Episode 13 - Crooked River
Location: Sickbay, Deck 5
Timeline: M001 0930hrs

Hermia going through the medical records of the resent arrivals to the ship.

She came upon the record of one Ensign Sinclair, the new ACSTO.

Pressing her comm. she said. "This is Doctor O'Rourke, please report to Sickbay, asap."

Keeping herself busy by unpacking her bags and organising her room, Rachel heard a call over the ships intercom from the CMO. Taking a deep breath to calm her nerves, she tapped her combadge, “on my way Ma’am” she said before placing the last of her shirts into a draw, picking up the hand PADD she was using to navigate the ship and heading out for sickbay.

It took her almost 10 minutes to find her way there. Standing just outside the doors to sickbay, Rachel took in another deep breath and held it for a moment before stepping in. She was not looking forward to the questions that were sure to come from the medical officer.

When Rachel entered Sickbay, Kimba approached her. "Excuse me, ma'am, you look a little lost. Can I help?" The nurse asked.

Turning to the nurse, Rachel put on her best smile, “Actually yes. I was asked to report to sickbay by the Chief. I hope I’m in the right place?”

"Yes, you are." Kimba said with a smile. "Let me lead the way."

Swallowing her nerves again, Rachel followed Kimba into sickbay

Kimba led the way to the CMO's office. Knocking on the door frame, she said. "Doctor, there's an Ensign here to see you."

"That must be Sinclair, send her in." Hermia called back.

"The Doctor will see you now, ma'am." Kimba said and returned to restocking the Dispensary.

Stepping into the office, Rachel stood at attention, “Ensign Rachel Sinclair reporting as ordered Ma’am”

"At ease, Sinclair. " Hermia said. "I'm Doctor Hermia O'Rourke, but you can call me ma'am, or Doc, if you prefer."

“Yes Ma’am” Rachel replied as she took a more relaxed stance, “Is there something I can do for you?”

"No need to worry, I just thought it best to get your post arrival physical out of the way." Hermia said. "Before we begin, is there anything that is not in your medical records, that I should be aware of?"

A little unsure what she should say, Rachel tried to think of what would be in her medical file and what her father may have told Starfleet Medical about her teen years. Taking a moment to think, Rachel eventually shook her head, "No I don't think so. Is there anything specific you want to know about?"

"No, just making sure your records are up to date." Hermia said. She could feel the Ensign's apprehension, but not what was causing it, she decided not pry.

"Okay, please sit on a biobed and I'll be with you shortly." Hermia said.
Some times she found her empathic abilities more of a curse than a gift.

taking a seat on one of the unoccupied biobeds, Rachel looked around at the Pioneer's sickbay. It was a great deal smaller then the ones on Earth or Spacedock, but she figured it made sense as the ship was an Intrepid class which was one of the smaller starship classes in the fleet. Giving her uniform shirt a bit of a brush down, she sat rather rigidly and waited for Hermia to return.

To be honest, Rachel didn't really want to take a walk down memory lane this soon after starting her first assignment, but she was starting to get the feeling that she might not have a choice. Although the doctors at Starfeet Medical did what they could, she still had several scars across her body from where she'd been whipped by her slaver master. Starting to feel her heart rate increase, Rachel closed her eyes and started taking deep breaths over and over attempting to calm herself down. Calm down, you are safe here, you are safe here she thought to herself almost as some kind of chant.

Hermia entered into the Sickbay proper, medical tri-corder in hand. "Sorry about the wait, I had to calibrate the tri-corder to your biology." Hermia said. "Sinclair...Rachel, the purpose of this physical is to asses your physical readiness for duty. We all have pasts and you only have to share what you wish to."

Opening her eyes at she heard Hermia talk, Rachel nodded, "Understood. Where do you want to start"

"Well, first I do a body scan, and then I'll take a blood sample." Hermia said. "An then you can go."

"Then why don't we get started? do you need me to do anything or should I just lay down?"

"Okay, lie down." Hermia said.

Once Rachel had done so, Hermia ran the tri-corder's scanner over her body while glancing at the data on the tri-corder itself.

The woman had a slight raise in blood pressure and her heart rate was slightly elevated, both of which were understandable under the circumstances. Her skin had many scars, but none were recent.
Hermia didn't need to be a doctor to know that Rachel had been suffered a lot of physical trauma, and by extension a lot of psychological trauma too.

When the scan was complete, Hermia said. "You can sit up now."

Moving to a seated position with her legs hanging over the edge of the bed, a thought came to Rachel and she looked to Hermia, "um, I don't mean to sound like a know it all, but I need a regular injection to suppress my...um" she said before she paused, forgetting the word she was looking for, "damn it, what's the word. It has something to do with my Orion half."

"A pheromone suppressant." Hermia said. "Of course. I'll have Nurse Rossi prepare one."

Rachel nodded, “Yes that’s it. Sorry, you'd think I’d remember something like that since, I’ve been taking it for for the past 4 years.”

"Its okay, we all forget things." Hermia said, grabbing a hypo with which to draw the blood.

Watching as Hermia took the blood sample, Rachel wondered what tests she needed to do. “So Is this what a typical Sickbay is like? It’s so small compared to the one on Spacedock or at the Academy”

"The size of a Sickbay is dependent on the number of patients it has to serve, since the crew of an Intrepid Class has a crew of less than 200, it is large enough to fill its needs, plus the Cargo Bays and Mess Hall can be converted to wards or triage stations, should the need arise." Hermia replied.

Listening to Hermia’s explanation, Rachel gave a nod, “yea that makes sense. Only having as much as needed” she said before figuring she’d satisfy her curiosity, “so what do you need the blood for?”

"The main use for it is so we can synthesise compatible blood for you in the event of a required transfusion, its also used diagnose any conditions that don't show up well in the general scans." Hermia said.

“Well I don’t think I have any conditions you’ll need to worry about. So that should make you job easier, hopefully” Rachel commented, trying to think of anything that might show up in a blood test, “Is there anything else you need from me?”

"No, but if you need someone to talk to, I'm here and I promise, I won't try to psychoanalyse you." Hermia said.

Rachel tensed up a bit before giving a nod, “um…I’ll keep that in mind. Thank you doctor” she said as she started to feel more and more nervous. Truly, Rachel would love to stop feeling this nervous whenever someone offered to talk or even asked her about her past, but so far the few times she’s tried to speak with a counsellor, her nerve gave out before she even reached the counsellors office. “Am I free to go?”

"Yes, nice meeting you, Ensign." Hermia said. She wished she could help Rachel more, but she knew not to force it. It was up to her when and if she wanted to talk about what was clearly bothering her.
