600 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Episode 10 - New Home, Same Pioneers
Location: Marine CO's Office, USS Pioneer
Timeline: MD008 1245hrs

Shuffling several flimsies into a resemblance of order, Neil selected the topmost and glanced at it. In response, his contact linked to the hard copy and a personnel jacket opened and he compared both and nodded to himself.

Neil was trying to get all of the data processing out of the way but there always seemed to be a never ending supply of it. Finishing the flimsy, he added his signature to the bottom of it and fed the plastic sheet into a reader and the document was added to the file he was looking.

Satisfied, the captain took a sip from the steaming cup of cha’ and replaced it on it’s warming disk before calling out, “Ok, Corporal. Send the condemned in.”

"Lance Corporal Rairror Thoran, reporting, sir." The Orion said after entering.

Neil looked over the Orion, his long practiced eye ensuring the marine was turned out as he expected them to be. After a few beats he said, "At ease, Rairror. Take a seat."

He gestured to the brace of leather and wooden framed chairs that sat before his desk and as the Lance Corporal sat he said. "It's that time of year again. Evaluations and the like. So, how are things going for you in the corps and aboard the Pioneer?"

"Sir, I feel that I have found a home, here." Rairror said.

Neil knew the lance corporal was a being of few words but this was getting a bit painful. "I'm glad to hear that Rairror," Neil said. "The Cure wouldn't be the same without you. Your rifle team got chewed up last time out. I know you're an old hand, but how are you dealing with that?"

"I'm angry ." Rairror said. "At those hostiles, at our lack of intell, and at myself for not being able to protect my Sergeant. I mourn him and hope that he is celebrated in his peoples' form of heaven." He added. Rairror had been a slave since he was born, the Corps was the only true family he'd had and losing a member of that family hit him hard. He had already scarred his body in remembrance of him, per Orion tradition.

Neil kept a steady gaze on the Orion and said, "Our comrades always live on in the Corp. And in us as we continue mission. As I said, you're an old hand so you know how to deal with the drahk. And you also know that Sergeant Flarn and I are always available if you need to bend an ear or hoist an elbow, although I think Flarn may be better at that second part then me."

The captain then said, "Speaking to the corp though. You've done good work since I've taken command. We need to take care of good marines like you and part of that is making sure you get promotions. Based on that, I've approved your promotion to Corporal."

"I am honoured, sir, I will endeavour to earn the trust you have placed in me." Rairror said.

Neil smiled at the Orion, waited a few beats and when no more was forth coming, he said, "Then that makes two of us, Corporal. When we have the open house, there will be a ceremony to go with it. You're dismissed, unless you have something for me."
