Location: XO Ready Room
Timeline: MD007 0800 hrs

Quinn was in his office, when he heard the intercom to his room go off. He had a couple of meetings this morning. A couple of new crew members reporting in. Finally Starfleet had sent them another science officer and helmsman. They were currently down in those two departments. Quinn smiled as he called out. "Enter."

Zaire came in the office and walked over coming to attention by the first officer’s desk.

“Ensign Bryne, reporting for duty in the science department,” Zaire spoke confidently though inside he was nervous. This was his first impression he needed to make it count.

"Glad you cleared that up Ensign, far as I knew you could have reported for Galley work, and been our new chef." Quinn suggested in a playful manner.

Zaire’s eyes widened and he grinned. “Sorry Commander, I am a little nervous, this being my first assignment.”

"Perfectly understandable. Sorry for busting your chops a little, I saw a mmoment and went with it." Quinn started to explain, then refocused his attention. "How was your trip to the Pioneer?" Quinn asked, deciding to carry forward.

“It was good,” Zaire said with a smile. “A lot of time to be excited about coming on board here and be a part of things.”

"This is a good crew, and we are apart of something special." Quinn pointed out to him, hoping that motivated him even more.

“I will work hard to be a valuable part of the crew,” Zaire replied earnestly. “I want to make a difference and be a part of a team.”

"You should it well with that attitude." Quinn said, with a big grin on his face.

“I have wanted this for a long time,” Zaire continued. “My family thought I was going to fail but I am determined to attain the life I want.”

Quinn wondered why he mentioned his family. It was a little out of the ordinary. But since he opened the door, he obligated to respond. "What do you mean?" Quinn asked.

“My parents have this plan for their children,” Zaire said quietly. “They even wanted to choose a wife for me but I want to make my own choices.”

"My understanding from Betazed Culture is, that Betazed pre arranged marriages are pretty successful." Quinn pointed out to Zaire. He knew his science officer was Betazed, he also knew his bride to be was already on the ship.

“She is,” Zaire smiled. “I believe in my culture and I have agreed to move forward with their choice.” He paused. “But I want to meet her and make certain we are compatible.”

"My understanding is this is arranged by one of the Betazed Ambassadors." Quinn said, debating if he should tell him first, or tell Kalina first. He knew, they both needed to know. Deep down, he wondered why did he relay the message?

Zaire heard what he said and knew his assignment to the Pioneer was prearranged for this purpose. He was irritated but consoled by the knowledge he was a good science officer. “Is there more?”

"I agree with you, you should meet her, I gave her the day off, so she could get settled in. And part of that means meeting her fiance." Quinn suggested, to him. He felt like cupid in a way, but not the fun loving cupid, but the cupid that was forcing a man to marry a woman, because of culture customs.

“This will be interesting,” Zaire replied with a slight smile. “What is her name and where will I find her, Commander?”

"Kalina Solwick, I have suggested to her today at 1200 hours, that she eat on the promenade. Might be a good safe way of meeting her, and getting to know her." Quinn suggested, still feeling awkward for playing cupid in a way.

“I will find her,” Zaire replied. “And find a way to tell her.” He looked at the Commander. “There is no good way, you realize that don’t you?”

"We all have our orders." Quinn simply replied with a half smile on his face.

“Yes Commander,”’Zaire nodded. “I confess I didn’t expect this one but I am up to the task.”

Quinn just smiled, remaining silent. He thought to himself, that's the spirit kid. But he kept his feelings to himself. "I suggest getting settled in and reporting to work tomorrow morning. You will be working with Commander tr'Hwersuil in the main science lab."

“Yes Commander,” Zaire replied. “I will drop my things off and then after I have met with Kalina I will definitely be prepared for work in the morning.”

"Glad to hear it, cause our time is almost up. Remember my door is always open." Quinn suggested to him, with a big grin. He was about to stand up, to say goodby. But he wanted to give Zaire this chance to address anything he needed too.

“Thank you Commander,” Zaire replied. “I appreciate your open door policy.” He was certain there was probably a question he should ask but he was preoccupied with thoughts of meeting his fiance.

"If nothing else..." Quinn started to say, as the door chimed. "There is my next appointment. If nothing else, you are free to go." Quinn said, with a big grin. He was not going to tell him, his next appointment was with his fiance. He did not want them to meet in his office.

"Thank you Sir," Zaire replied and headed on his way. He had some things to do before he headed to meet up with Kalina Solwick.

Quinn felt like he threw Kalina and Zaire to the wolves, but those where his orders. And he followed them. Now it was time to ask Tyler why he did not handle the ambassadors request personally. Typically captains want to be in all chummy with Ambassadors.
