Mission: Episode 8 - The Silence
Location: Astrometrics - Deck 8 - USS Pioneer
Timeline: MD001 1200 hrs

To further help in her research for the First Officer's special project, Jayna wanted to look through the Astrometric data from the Pioneer's missing year. To that end, she made an appointment to meet with the Chief Science Officer. Instead of wearing her preferred leather, she chose her uniform jumpsuit and went to the Astrometrics lab.

Vaebn stood at the central control terminal in Astrometrics, guiding the holographic display along the Z and Y axis of the spatial grid to get a better view of the anomaly. After WO Jayna contacted him with questions from last year, he realized that he had never really gotten a good look at the fabricated imagery from the sensor logs. So here he stood, staring into the tear that stole a year from his fellow crewmates, waiting for the WO to join him. He took a long pull from his ever present mug of coffee and stared deeper into its heart.

She walked into the lab and paused to admire the anomaly. From here, it looked incredible. "Hello, lieutenant," she said, bowing politely. "I am Mira Jayna. Thank you for agreeing to meet with me."

Vaebn pulled his thoughts from the images and turned to the voice, "No trouble at all Officer Jayna. Your request caught me a bit off-guard, especially when I realized that I hadn't done much digging myself." He gestured for her to join him by the controls, "Besides, its been quite a while since someone from the Starfleet Intelligence service has reached out to me."

She was even more impressed with the controls when she came to stand beside him. "Really? that surprises me. Astrometrics is one of the best places for intel--at least in my experience," she said. "Then again, I have never been on a ship with an intel department like this one."

She looked around from this position. "I'm impressed."

"That is an excellent point. One that I am very intimately familiar with. Although the last time I had a private one on one was near the end of the Dominion War. And Starfleet's astrometrics systems are far beyond what the Empire had then. Maybe they still are, which is probably why I spend so much time down here. But you didn't come here to listen to me wax philosophical about days past." Vaebn looked her directly in the eyes with a hard edge, "What are you looking for exactly Officer?"

She met his gaze frankly. "I can't tell you. I'm afraid it's classified. I can just tell you that I need to do some digging into a number of things that directly involve Astrometrics over the past year or so. But I can promise that I'm not going to cause you any trouble. I know I'm asking a lot. I'm asking for you to teach me about this lab, let me poke around without knowing exactly why, and trust me enough to leave me here alone to do research. I may be able to tell you at some point, but that decision is not up to me." She smiled, knowing what she was asking. "I will share anything I find that isn't directly related to what I'm looking for."

"I can understand that." Vaebn turned and his fingers danced upon the control display, "Your display should now have the chronological listing of the appropriate files. The lateral sensors were tied into the sensor whiskers we had deployed at the time so that could give you an exterior point of reference as well as the static and active sensors from Pioneer itself. The astrometrics systems more than likely were recording internally only as we had limited contact with Starfleet from the Badlands." He indicated a few different file menus as he spoke, "I hope this data will help you in your endeavors. I'll lock the lab down until you have finished, and if you need anything else, you know how to find me."

"Thank you," Jayna said. "I will definitely ask if I need anything." She wanted to look at the long-range scanner data first, then the incoming data packets, then any gaps in the logs. "I owe you a coffee or something for this."

"I will happily exchange my services for coffee any day." Vaebn responded with a smirk. "Happy hunting Officer Jayna."

"Thanks!" She smiled back. Jayna rather liked the science officer. Hopefully she'd be able to work with him on something that wasn't classified. When he'd gone, she pulled out a data rod with some programs to help her sift through the data, loaded it into the computer, and went to work.
