Mission: Episode 4 - The Sum of Our Parts
Location: SCIF - DWS Pioneer
Timeline: MD001 1900 hrs

Last Time On What It Is Ain't Exactly Clear

"Ah just like a married couple." Amelia mused as the two before her quipped at each other. "I guess I'll use my current status to intimidate information out of people, try and find something useful that will help us figure some of this out." She added. "Loose lips sink ships I hear."

"Very well, see you both at the SCIF in a few hours." Billy stated then turned and left. All the while puffing away on his pipe.

Amelia nodded in agreement and left the room with Calhoun. He went one way down the corridor, Amelia the other.

And Now The Continuation

May 28 2394 1900 hrs (relative time)

There was good news and there was bad news for Calhoun. The bad news was that it seemed in this universe he was the senior man in Intelligence, which was also part of the good news. Due his department head status he was able to access information that was greatly needed. However, every time he started to make headway he had to stop and maintain his cover. For the time being Billy had cleared the SCIF and he expected Amelia and the Cardassian Jati any minute. He snapped his fingers he had almost forgotten, Billy popped his head outside to the outer office. "Sergeant, Lieutenant Zano, and Glen Niall will be joining me momentarily. When they arrive please allow them access without delay."

"Yessir!" Gaagii replied as he nodded curtly.

Cardassians were nothing if not punctual. Jati walked in at that precise moment and said, "Good policy. Some of the men seem a bit too eager patting me down in the name of security." She walked in, her tone turning more serious. "I have uncomfortable news. Where's the interrogator? Preparing a demonstration on how to extract it?"

Calhoun nodded sagely at Jati's comment. "You will have to forgive them, they have never seen a Cardassian built quite like you. I don't think there is a Cardassian built quite like you." He chuckled and turned toward the SCIF's main room, Billy waived for the Cardassian to follow him.

"That's no excuse", Jati responded, following him. "Some of them look unusual as well. Doesn't mean I'll give in to my scientific curiosity and start running tests on them either." She smirked. "Perhaps I should."

"I don't think so!" Ameila said entering the room just hearing the comment from the Cardassian female. "Testing on sentient beings no matter their intellect." She added pointing by the doors and fixing her uniform, the subject of a slight pat down herself. "Is totally immoral, I wouldn't mind someone doing a brain scan on the taller one though... definitely something missing there."

Once the two ladies were inside Calhoun hurried to get things settled. He placed his finger to his lips to get Amelia and Jati to quiet down. "Computer secure the SCIF. No one in, no one out. Authorization Calhoun Deutschland 009foxtrot421." "The SCIF is sealed" the voice of the computer responded. Billy started pacing the SCIF turning off the consoles except for his. "While you are at it, computer, sever all internal links between the SCIF and the rest of the DWS Pioneer." Billy continued.

=/\="This procedure requires the authorization of two Officers of the Order."=/\=

"Recognize Officer of the Order Senior Chief Petty Officer Leslie Calhoun. Chief Intelligence Officer DWS Pioneer." Billy called out the computer in cadence.

=/\="Chief Intelligence Officer recognized, Officer of the Order. Standing by for secondary officer input."=/\=

Without speaking Billy mouthed to Amelia, "Repeat what I said. Do it with confidence. I will explain."

With a bewildered look Amelia nodded and followed suit. "Recognize Officer of the Order Lieutenant Amelia Zano. Senior Interrogator DWS Pioneer." She announced to the computer.

=/\="Chief Interrogator recognized, Officer of the Order. SCIF is now severed from the DWS Pioneer."=/\=

"The first thing that I have learned is there are three Officers of the Order on this ship, and you and I are two of them. It seems that these officers can supersede the Gul if they choose. It has to do with the Obsidian Order, or something like it. I am not exactly sure why they would institute such a policy." Billy said as he breathed a sigh of relief that the trick worked.

"Who is the third?" Jati asked. If those two El-Aurians held that degree of power, knowing who the third one was, and whether that person would have to be dealt with, was first on Jati'a agenda. But she wasn't going to make any suggestions in that direction until she had all the data.

"The third Officer of the Order is the XO, a Trill named Dara Jax. I have not had a chance to speak with her as for some reason the Gul does not allow her to leave the bridge except to sleep." Billy replied to Jati's question. "What did you two learn?"

Jati handed each of them a PADD. "These are the scan results. I've spoken with my mother, and she's spoken with a friend and research partner who is also an expert in the field. They're both agreed that the anomaly is causing a different quantum reality to intersect with ours. Imagine two soap bubbles that are touching each other. It can be resolved in three ways. One bubble can be destroyed, keeping the other intact. Which is two ways, depending which bubble you're in. Or the membrane between the two collapses, and the bubbles merge. In our case, the results would be unpredictable, but certainly traumatic for everyone who has got mixed up between the two. We are to proceed to the anomaly and generate an antichroniton pulse precisely tuned to the quantum signature of the other reality. This will close the anomaly, most likely the other side will then cease to exist, but this reality will be safe." Jati decided not to mention the other option for now. She still wasn't sure that the Gul wasn't listening in to what she was reporting, and she was most certain he had seen what correspondence she had shared with her mother. She had to play it safe, dared not reveal the decision she had already made to modulate the antichroniton pulse the other way at the last second.

Calhoun's eyes widened at all that Jati had said. "But if we execute that plan, how do we ensure that we are restored to our timeline. Well more accurately the correct timeline for us."

"It's a good question." Amelia said as she leaned against the wall in thought. "Most people I've spoken to have shied away from me, not willing to give whole answers and trying to get away from me as fast as they could..." For a moment she thought. "Forgive my ignorance of temporal anomalies but is there a way we can 'point' this antichroniton pulse at a specific time rather than a whole universe? Surely the fact we are two bubbles merging there must have been a central point, where it began? Maybe that can separate us, like a magnet pushing us back into our own paths... I for one am not a fan of this bubble..."

"We must separate the timelines, and one will not continue", Jati explained. "And who is to say the other is better than this one? Is that your decision to make? I doubt it. I have prepared a report to Gul Prenar, and I am sure he will follow the advice of the Vorta, as any loyal member of the Dominion would."

The last comment from this Glen put Billy on edge. Same chroniton signature or not, there was something not right here. "Listen no one is saying that one timeline is better than the rest. In truth all we want is to go home. So if your plan involves making sure that one timeline is deleted from existence then, it is not acceptable." He paused for a moment as a thought occurred to him. "Now that you mention it, I have not seen a single Vorta, or Jem'Hadar on this vessel. That is very curious given the state of the Dominion that we know."

"Then you haven't been to the bridge, there were several Jem'Hadar manning bridge stations", Jati said. She walked over to a console and accessed the projections, based on the collected data. "This is as close a representation as I am able to make. There is a focal point in spacetime here, which is where a split occurred, which was in turn cause here." She pointed at the location of the anomaly they were headed towards. "The causal link this anomaly has works both ways, and depending on what quantum modulation we give our antichroniton blast, we're choosing one reality over the other. I do not think there is a way to preserve both, none of the simulations I've run have yielded that result, and people more knowledgeable than me agree with that assessment."

Billy's mind wandered, and for some reason he thought back to something his father told him almost five hundred years ago. "For Amelia and myself it will not really matter what you do. As El Aurians the timeline shifts around us. It is hard to explain but if my hunch is correct..." His voice trailed off as he accessed an LCARS console. In short order an account from Guinan aboard the USS Enterprise D was on the main viewer. "This is an account of Guinan of El Auria. She was aboard the Enterprise when a ship with the same name emerged from a temporal anomaly. The older Enterprise was supposed to have been destroyed defending the Klingons. An act which would lead to the Klingon/Federation peace treaty. Since this did not happen now, the Federation was at war with the Klingons. It was only Guinan who knew the truth. This is the feeling that I have had since waking up in the SCIF. Amelia you may be too young to grasp this, no offense. But if you really concentrate you will realize that you are fine, but it is time that is wrong. The question is... What event caused this?" Billy stepped back from the computer so the Glen could have a good look.

There was a nagging feeling within her, of that there was no doubt. It was slight, maybe not as obvious for someone of her age but she believe Calhoun, trusted him. "I feel something... not too sure what it is though." she replied honestly to her counterpart.

The tension in the room had risen, no need for an empath to tell that. Amelia noted Calhoun's shift in stance as he looked once again to Glen Niall.

Billy looked at the Glen with a steely gaze before he spoke. "Listen, I know you are not from this universe either. Well at least the tests confirm that. What we need to know is if you are from the same universe as us? If you are we then need to figure out how and why you were unaffected by the time change. Who is the leader of the Detapa Council where you are from? Where were you when you encountered the temporal anomaly and why were you there? Now is not the time for secrets."

Jati shook her head. "No, none of this matters. You may have an innate sense of how timelines shift and quantum realities intersect, but no amount of comparing events will give us authoritative data." She made a gesture as if to swipe away the narrative. "Anecdotal at best, differences between quantum realities can be as minute as someone shaving a beard off where they retained their dignified expression of facial hair in another. You're not going to ask me whether Elim Garak has a beard, are you?" She took a breath. "What we need to do in order to find a definitive answer to your question is go to sickbay, have our quantum signatures compared. My tricorder isn't exact enough, the scans I took earlier have too much of an error in measurement to be sure. I'm sure I can convince Dr. Rossi to keep it between us, though she is understandably upset with this situation already."

"You still have not answered my other question Glen Niall. Where were you when you encountered the anomaly? Or did you not encounter one at all." Billy took a slow step toward her, he had purposely changed his tone and language to something more formal. There was something amiss here, and he was going to find out what before going to Sick Bay.

Amelia gestured to catch Billy's attention but not the Cardassian's. She was signalling him to take a step back, to realise that pressing a Cardassian will further push them to hide what they know. "It's an easy question to answer Ms Niall, to quickly answer it will allow us to move on."

"I don't see how it's relevant", Jati responded. "I was in a Hideki class patrol ship, I don't remember its name. I was on my way to Empok Nor to deliver it there, so I was the only one aboard. I was going that way and it was more efficient to have me fly the ship over, rather than employ a pilot separately and have me take a liner." She figured this would be a no-brainer. "There was a distress signal from a science station, exactly where the temporal anomaly is now. So yes, I have no doubt that's related. It does not give us any reliable data to answer the original question, though. Only a deep quantum scan can do so. Trust me on this, I'm a scientist. Speculation and conjecture gives me ideas what to look for, but unless I can back it up with hard data, it's useless."

Her response was typically Cardassian and frustrated Billy to no end. All he needed was a straight answer and all of this would and could be be solved. He turned in frustration and shot Amelia a look that read he was done. She could deal with the Cardie from this point on. Furthermore he used body language to show it as he walked behind Amelia and looked at Jati.

Amelia sighed, she felt the pressure build on her as it seemed that Calhoun was Cardassian'd out. In her mind she rummaged through trying to remember if any techniques for getting information out of Cardassians came to mind but her experience with them had been somewhat limited to 2 previous sessions.

One even gloated about killing an undercover Trill from the former organisation that was Starfleet. That he stopped this Trill from stopping a large scale Dominion offensive that led to a great victory for them.

Then a flash crossed her eyes, call it a memory or a flutter from the past but a face came into view. "Joran Thal." she said almost surprising herself.

She saw the others looking at her in some confusion as to why she had said this but Calhoun for a moment seemed to have his own second of realisation. "Forgive me." Amelia said, "I have this image of talking to a man, a Trill male in a grey Starfleet uniform. He was enlisted, a Warrant Officer I think, but I don't know if I know him. I get the impression I do and the name Joran Thal comes in to my mind when I see him. Do we have anyone on board with that name?"

"I don't know", Jati said. She accessed a console and ran a search. "No crewmember by that name, but there is indeed a member of Starfleet listed, deceased, during the early phase of the war." She brought up the file for the other two. "Intelligence officer, apparently fairly capable, too."

The doors to the SCIF flung open and Gul Prenar along with three Jem Hadaar troopers burst in. A smile crept across his face, for in the near future Hadir knew he would have the exquisite pleasure of torturing the female Cardassian. "Well, well how is this for a nice little meeting? We have been monitoring all you have said, and plan on taking the doctor into custody as well. You are all relived of duty." Hadir spoke his voice dripped with disdain.

Jati looked at him incredulously. "You've been listening, then you know what's going on, why would you relieve me of duty?" she wondered. "I'm in the process of figuring out the cause for the anomaly we've been specifically asked to investigate, after my report to command. What else would you have me do?"

Hadir signaled the Jem Hadaar to take up a perimeter in the room. It was then that two Marines a male with long black hair and tanned skin and a female entered armed with phaser rifles. They flanked the Gul on either side. "First and foremost I AM Command. Something we learned in the aftermath of the war was that starship commanders should be allowed to operate independently of Central Command, within reason of course. In this case I am well within reason. As to why you are being relieved of duty. How do the words conspiracy to commit treason sound? Sergeant Gaagii, Corporal Kunadt take these three traitors into custody. Bring the El Aurians to the IH and lock that one up in interrogation room 3. I will deal with her personally." Hadir was practically salivating as the two Marines stepped forward to follow their orders.

"Wait!" Jati cried. "You don't understand. There is no conspiracy. It's called the scientific process. You're a man, I know you have neither the patience nor the calm collectedness needed for that kind of work. At least let me present to you what results we've got so far. You'll see there's no treason involved. Even a Vorta councillor agrees with this." An argument to authority, so technically a logical fallacy, but Vorta were famous for their unquestioning loyalty, so Jati hoped it held some sway nonetheless.

Amelia began to back into the room, fighting was never one of her strongest suits. She could feel the eyes of the marines as the began to circle like vultures around their next meal.

"I think this is a big misunderstanding Gul." she began, attempting to use some techniques to calm the situation as she felt the tension rise. "We are not committing treason by simply investigating an anomaly that affects us all. Surely someone as intelligent as yourself knows that value of bringing such information to your superiors would only gain you prestige. Think of the accolades you could receive from this. The man that solved the riddle. Legate would look good on you." She said moving forward a little now, her fear of physical violence peaking in the back of her mind but she had to try and stroke the man's ego.

"DO YOU THINK I AM A FOOL?" Hadir bellowed. "You have not been speaking about simply an anomaly, you have been speaking about timelines and which one is he correct one. I have already seen the scans and know that all three of you do not belong here. Take them now", he urged his men into action.

Billy had been standing on the sidelines long enough. As Gaagii approached Amelia he stepped in front of her a squared his jaw. "You will stand down Marine. You stand down or I am going to pop you right in the mouth."

"Don't fight!" Jati said. "You are correct, Gul Prenar. I am not from this timeline in one way, but I am in another. I have memories from both, but this is the one we're in and I intend to preserve it. That is not treasonous, and you can ask Dr. Rossi, who is fully from this timeline, about whether I am not at least half the person who has always belonged here. These El-Aurians, their inborn skill and biological senses are immensely useful in solving this problem. Take us out of the picture now, we might see further effects, changes we don't want, and certainly can't control."

The Gul's eyes widened when she spoke of being from both timelines. Hadir knew that meant that her head was filled with information from both timelines something he wanted to take advantage of. "Never fear Dr Rossi is already in custody so we will have all information that she can give shortly. The three of you will come with us or you will be taken with us. Your choice, choose now I am losing my patience." Hadir spat the words out at them. He wanted to kill them all but knew the information that they had was too valuable.

Jati realised that there was no getting through to him. Something had suspended his higher reasoning skills, and she suspected it did not have anything to do with the predicament the three of them now found themselves in. "You're making a mistake", she said. "But I'll come with you." She was no fighter, and certainly couldn't hope to stand against him, several Jem'Hadar and the marines. She wasn't going to commit suicide now and rob herself of possible opportunities later.

As things escalated a touch, Amelia noticed Calhoun move in to protect her, and it warmed her heart slightly and she did give a little smile. Apparently Jem'Hadar did not like this and two of them moved in, one for Calhoun and the other for Amelia.

Unknown to her however a third had moved in behind her and as her main attacker went to grab her she yelled, "Don't touch me! I've done nothing!" and threw and elbow behind her to snatch it from the hands of him. In doing so she knocked out the ketracel white tube from the Jem'Hadar behind her, call it luck. Then things got a little more physical for all parties...

Jati was annoyed that a fight had started after all. But now that it had, her only option was to join in, or she'd certainly be among the casualties. Not that she had any amount of confidence in her martial prowess. At least, she had some body mass, and charged head-first into the closest Jem'Hadar, ducking out of the way of what she expected to be a shot fired in her general direction any second now.

Billy saw Amelia's actions through the corner of his eye, and he was proud. However, that feeling of pride lasted but a moment as he had to join in the fray. So he made good on his threat with a minor change. Billy let loose with a roundhouse kick to Gaagii's temple which caused the Marine to stagger back and fall to the ground unconscious. He had but moments as Kunadt let loose with a blast from her phaser. The man may have been old but his fighting skills were top notch. He dodged the blast and took the woman's legs out from under her. She toppled to the ground and the two wrestled for moment. Ultimately it was Billy who rose to his feet with the phaser in his hand. Without looking he shot Kunadt at point blank in the chest. Then he turned his fire on the Gul he knew that if you cut the head from the dragon the others would fall in line.

Hadir Prenar had lost control of the situation and himself and it had happened in a matter of seconds. All that he wanted was the three officers in his custody all other objectives meant nothing. He thumbed his phaser into the heavy stun setting and returned fire to the male El-Aurian. The first shot sailed wide, but the second shot hit its mark and the El-Aurian fell to the ground like a sack of potatoes. One down two to go the Cardassian thought.

Jati was surprised when her sudden moved worked out more in her favour than she had expected. The Jem'Hadar she had rammed had his finger on the trigger and accidentally discharged his weapon, taking out his companion who was about to move in on the group from the other side. Jati ignored the weapon. She had no fighting experience but she knew that going for the Jem'Hadar's rifle meant losing the fight, the man was much more experienced than her, and he only advantages were lower centre of mass and a few bony ridges that gave Cardassians an additional amount of sturdiness as compared to most other humanoids. But Jati had one skill which, after a split second of strategising, her mind hit on. In the Jem'Hadar's physical makeup, there was one weakness the Dominion had not been able to breed out of them yet. As such, Jati's knee went up and struck the man right between his never-before-used private parts, causing not only pain but also confusion. That was the opportunity she needed to ram her fist into his throat and crush his windpipe.

Then she grabbed his weapon and turned around, pointing it at Prenar, with one hand. Her left arm didn't respond right, and a quick glance revealed why. There was a Jem'Hadar knife sticking out of her upper arm. She'd need some help soon, those knives were always coated in the same anti-coagulant that was added to the rifle blasts. "Gul Prenar! Put down your weapon", she ordered, breathing heavily.

Hadir saw what happened to the Jem'Hadar and he had to act quickly. He grabbed Amelia and spun her around and placed his disruptor to her temple. "It seems what we have here is a stand off. I suggest you drop your weapon or we will all see what the El-Aurian brain looks like."

Jati tried her best to calm her breathing. She was no kind of crack shot, so shooting past her to get him was not an option for her. Maybe it would have been in a calmer situation, such as a holodeck exercise, but not under stress. But she had other options. "You're using the wrong tool for that. You'd need a laser scalpel to open the skull. With this, you'll blow it to bits, and whatever emerges will be unrecognisable." She wasn't going to back down. She had no reason to want to see Amelia killed, but she was going to accept her as a casualty, rather than allowing him to shoot her.

It all happened so fast she never saw Hadir coming until it was too late and he had her in his grasp. She was upset, annoyed at the fact she'd been almost utterly useless in doing anything but she didn't believe in fighting, even less in killing. She could hear in Hadir's tone, the feel of his breathing on her back that he was scared, panicked. That he was indeed not going to back down as he knew what that would mean should he become an easy target but her choice was simple.

Him, or her? Not really a question for a sentient being that at the worst of times will do anything to survive.

Sighing and letting her shoulder slump a little her body shifted in Hadir's grasp. He felt this and tried to shift into a more secure stance but Amelia took his lessened grip, even if it was for a moment, to her advantage and stuck her elbow in his gut. Yes it seemed like a good idea at the time and as he bent over his weapon discharged catching Amelia's side. She fell to the floor clutching it but also looking up at Jati to see what she was going to do. Would she fire?

The way Jati saw it, she had no other choice. The window of opportunity would close in again fast, so she squeezed the trigger.

The movement of Amelia caught the lumbering Cardassian off guard and she managed to wriggle free. Hadir did wound her for her efforts, but his celebration was caught short as a disruptor blast hit him square in the chest. There was a look of shock and surprise as the energy and pain overtook him. Prisoners, always remember prisoners... Those were Hadir Prenar's last thoughts as he realized two things. The first was that telling his soldiers to shoot to kill was a mistake. Secondly that all Cardassians are destined to fall victim to their own hubris. He dropped to his knees as a short gurgle left his throat, then settled on the deck face down.

She had hoped to get him to help, but that was too late. Now they'd have to figure out a way to take control of the ship, and Jati didn't even know who'd be in charge after Prenar. "Now what?"

Billy had just risen from the ground, the stun making his slightly disorientated before he spoke as he caught his breath. "Now we hope we can get the fuck out of here before his XO gets word that we killed him." He accessed the computer control and was able to secure the room using his Intelligence codes. "I am not sure how long that trick is going to work, so we need to move fast."

"I say we ask him to come down here, and see if we can convince him of the wisdom of our course of action", Jati said. She paused a moment, then decided to level with them. "I was going to change the quantum signature at the last minute, to lock it in to where we've come from. This timeline isn't what we should be living in, not us personally, and not Cardassia. But I have one request on which it hinges. You'll remember what's happened here once we're back where we belong, yes?" As she waited for his response, she picked up the weapon Hadir had dropped, and discarded the unfamiliar Jem'Hadar rifle. Before then, she had never killed anyone before, but she was still a lot more familiar with the Cardassian phaser, regardless.

"Does anyone have anything I can stop this bleeding with before we go anywhere or do anything?" Amelia asked wincing. "And as much as I am a fan of talking things out... we just shot and killed our CO and beat up a lot of other people. I don't think the XO will listen to our reasons."

"If he doesn't, he'll at least be down here where we can take him out quietly", Jati reasoned. She put her phaser on a higher setting and started disposing of the evidence by disintegrating the bodies. She decided to leave it to Calhoun to produce medical tools, as he seemed to be reasonably familiar with the surroundings.

Billy finally got the answers that he wanted, so he took a few tentative steps toward Jati. "You are correct Glen, as El-Aurians Amelia and myself will remember all that has transpired here. But I fail to see why that is important. As to the XO I suggest we do not push our luck. We need to get this correction done and get it done now." As he spoke Calhoun remembered the medkit that Thal would keep in his office. He guessed correctly that in this timeline Billy himself did the same. He knelt to assist Amelia as best as he could.

"We need to take control of both the bridge and deflector control to execute my plan", Jati said. "Either we convince him, replace him or trick him. I'm not good at tricking people. Also, we'll need to free Valentina Rossi from custody, and use her expertise for more detailed answers which you, yourself, have requested." She vapourised the last of the evidence, Calhoun's marines, and holstered the phaser. "Now, my condition for doing so is that you'll level with me, back when we're were we've originally come from, and tell me everything. I have a girlfriend in this reality, I didn't before. I don't want to do this, forget I've ever had her and never meet her again."

Billy extended his hand to shake the Cardassian woman's. "You have my word." After he found common ground with Jati he turned toward Amelia. "Listen, Amelia I have a plan. But it will involve you being one tough SOB. As far as anyone knows you are the Chief Interrogator, and the Gul has gone missing. The first suspect would be the XO. You have him taken into custody and then assume command until it could all be worked out. The Glen and I will head to Deflector Control and we will retrieve the good doctor on the way."

"I think you've proven you're tougher than you look already", Jati said. It was intended as encouragement, both for Amelia and for herself. She had never killed anyone before, and she'd never seen herself as a fighter. And now she had disposed of the Gul, and the marines Calhoun had only knocked unconscious before. She had always prided herself on her keen, logical mind, and her willingness to do what was necessary in any situation, but she'd never been forced to act violently and under pressure before. Now all she had to do was keep it up, valour and all.

"Alright..." Amelia began. "I suppose I can put on the bravado act but you really want me to arrest the XO?" Asking rhetorically as if straightening it out in her own mind. "Ok... I'll do it! Patch me up and I'll find some courage. Got to put on a good act to convince the crew that I'm who they think I am. Let's get moving... once I'm patched up a little more." she added giving Calhoun a little pat on the arm.

Billy smiled at Amelia, it was the smile that a parent has when their child superseded all expectations. He patched up her injuries. He looked at Jati as it dawned on him that she had killed everyone in the room. He raised his hand and opened his mouth as if he was going to chastise her for doing so. However, in that moment he realized that she was not Starfleet and therefore not governed by the same decorum as he or Amelia. He mentally dropped the subject for now. "Well then, let us get going."
To Be Concluded...
