"Commander Malbrooke please report to the Astrometrics Lab..." The voice of the Chief Science Offier pulled Tyler out of his ennui. "I'm on my way." Tyler responded over the comm, "Lieutenant you have the bridge." He addressed his Chief of Security and off he went.

He both hoped for and disliked the idea that the whiskers may have found something. As much as Tyler wanted something to happen out here he longed for a nice quiet few days here in the Badlands. Some time for his crew to bond, although from what he saw as he walked through the ship the bonds were formed already even in the short time.

He walked into the Astrometrics Lab and found both the Chief and Assistant Chief of his science department waiting. "Vaebn, Zavior not that I don't enjoy the exercise, but to what do I owe the honor." he smiled broadly to both of them.

"Sir, I am happy to report that our whiskers are working beyond what I was hoping for. We are receiving accurate telemetry for navigation, and managing to map a significant portion of the Badlands as we pass." Vaebn turned to the main console and pulled up a holographic image of the Badlands, zoomed in to show the Pioneer. "This is our current position and the surrounding space that has been mapped." He slid his fingers down a panel and the image zoomed out to show a larger view, and something else. "This is the sub-sector including this portion of the Badlands with our new data overlaid onto it. And this," he highlighted to unknown object, "appears to be some sort of positional array or other type of high orbital station, of an unknown make."

Tyler looked to the screen with no show of emotion, he simply nodded. "Is there any way that we can split the sensors. I want all the information on that array that we can get. There should be nothing out here accept us." Using his old Operational knowledge Tyler stepped toward one of the open consoles and started looking where he could borrow computing power from.

"I can redirect our lateral sensor array and piggyback that signal through the nearest whisker. Long-range sensors are useless in this mess. If you could manually hold whisker Gamma - 3 in position we should be able to get a closer look at the object." His fingers danced across the control console as he narrowed two of the lateral arrays to relay their signal through the whisker, and aim the sensors to get a clear reading. His hands operated independently across three panels as he focused on the telemetry and auspex readings. He spared a glance across the room, "Just hold it steady and direct the primary power to boost the relays Commander."

Tyler nodded in acceptance of what his Science Officer had said. "Got it! Redirecting the power now. Let me know if anything comes through." Just as Tyler finished his sentence the image of a small group of fighters lit up on the screen. "What the hell?" was all he utter as he stared in disbelief.

Vaebn looked closer in amazement. A squad of Federation Peregrine class interceptors were on an intercept course from, what was now obviously, the station in the distance. Rapid data burst were now coming in and Vaebn unscrambled the bursts as rapidly as he could with this new threat on the proverbial horizon. "Commander, initiate proximity defense systems for the whiskers."

This was Vaebn's baby and as such Tyler obeyed the order with all due haste. He also opened a channel to the bridge. "Bridge this is Astrometrics go to red alert, battle stations, I repeat battle stations. I will be there in a moment." He closed the channel. "Whiskers are responding, defenses fired minimal damage." He reported to the Science officer.

An indicator tab lit up and the defense systems went active in all the whiskers. "I will keep the data stream active if possible and pull the whiskers into a close defense grid to help create a screen against incoming projectiles." he called to Malbrooke as the commander turned towards the door. He quickly tapped a few more commands into the console and then turned abruptly to join Malbrooke into the corridor. He tapped his comm badge, "Vaebn to bridge, whiskers are on automated defense and I am on the way with the Commander. The defense grid should buy us some extra time." He walked briskly to catch up with Malbrooke, "I set the data stream to hold on whisker Gamma-3 and moved it away from the engagement zone. Hopefully the storms here will keep it hidden until we can retrieve it later." They stepped into the turbolift at the end of the corridor, "In the mean-time, I believe I should be on the bridge with you."

Tyler nodded and smiled "Good work Lieutenant. Now let's see if we can catch some mice." He turned on his heel and started for the bridge in step with his Science Officer.
