Personality & Traits

General Overview Dana has a soft well-spoken posh voice; some would say she grew up with a silver spoon in her mouth as she never wanted for anything. The only child of Fleet Admiral Wilfred Sutherland and prominent surgeon and federation council member Janet Sutherland. Although people may see her as privileged, it has come at a tremendous cost. Growing up she only had a nanny, and then in later life; she was always flanked by security personnel, This tended to put people off, or when they learned who she was, they tried to use her or got close just to try and better themselves. The Sutherland name always preceded her, so she finally convinced her father to allow her to get assigned a position on her own merits, with her mothers maiden name and without the security. To do this Starfleet permitted the creation of a fake background and service history, even to the trained eye it would stand up rigorous testing.
Strengths & Weaknesses Dana is strong-willed, she likes to voice her opinion and does not like it when she does not get her way. Sometimes social situations can be awkward for her; this is primarily due to how the room frequently went quiet when people found out who she was. Her main weaknesses are trying not to use her real name, or let on who she really is, plus the loss of her maid often means her quarters are messy.
Ambitions To follow in the Sutherland footsteps, however, she wants to carve out her own career on her own merits, not just by using her name.
Hobbies & Interests Dana likes to keep physically fit; she can speak several languages as well as play the piano. Like many women she loves the finer things in life, something which has never been a problem for her, she has many designer outfits. She also enjoys using the holodeck rather it be for an adventure or just to escape. She is a keen reader and can hold a sophisticated conversation.

Personal History Dana grew up under the care of a nanny, Kathryn. Mainly due to the positions her parents held, and due to the fact her father Wilfred did not want her aboard a ship in harm’s way, so instead, she grew up in the family home in San Francisco. Dana grew a close bond with Kathryn, she was more than a nanny, to Dana she was more like family than hired help.

Growing up was hard for Dana, she was often seen as privileged, and other children would tease her, which was something Dana couldn’t grasp. Was it out of jealousy because she had never wanted for anything, or was it due to the fact she spoke with a posh, educated accent. The family would often receive threats, so Wilfred took it upon himself to protect his family, and at the age of 12, she was assigned two security personnel to protect her, again this exasperated things and the teasing only got worse. This made it hard for Dana to forge relationships and if it weren’t for the help from Kathryn, her nanny, Dana would have had a troubled childhood.

Her parents had always had a plan for Kathryn; she was going to follow in there footsteps, after all the family name carried weight and she was soon enrolled into Starfleet Academy, there was no entrance exam, and Dana was fast-tracked. Again this caused resentment among fellow cadets, they saw her as privileged, and that her high marks were due to her name and favouritism, they didn’t see the blood, sweat and tears that she put into her work. Her high marks were down to her effort, not the family name, but people still resented her, she still had her security attachment which again didn’t help her cause. The few people that did try and get close and forge friendships, simply did it to try and better there own career and prospects, they didn’t do it because they liked Dana, they simply saw her as an easy ticket. Dana did not see this at first until Kathryn offered her words of wisdom and after she put the friendships to the test, she was disappointed with the results and after that found it hard to forge close friendships of her own.

Dana was seen as a rising star and with the fast track was offered prime picks in assignments, especially in command. Again this caused resentment with her fellow officers and peers; again they thought it was her family name, at this point Dana had, had enough. She wanted to prove to the world that she could forge her career under her own steam without the assistance of her family or the family name. She finally approached her father and asked him for that chance. Therefore Starfleet agreed to a special dispensation, they allowed her to use her mothers maiden name, and they allowed her official record to be altered, this way her true identity would not be easily discovered and the information within her record would stand up to scrutiny.
